A Minnesota woman whose S.U.V. struck a horse and buggy last fall, killing two children and injuring two others, tried to trick the authorities into believing that her twin sister was the driver, according to court documents. The woman, Samantha Petersen, 35, was charged Monday with 21 counts, including criminal vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of drugs and leaving the scene of the crash in Stewartville, Minn. Statements Ms. Petersen made imply that she had tried to deceive investigators to avoid going to prison, according to a complaint filed in Fillmore County District Court. According to the complaint, Ms. Petersen was driving a silver S.U.V.

A San Francisco McDonald's is being sued after a woman in her 80s allegedly sustained "severe burns" from a scalding cup of coffee and was refused help by store employees. Childress alleges that the incident caused her to suffer severe burns, scarring, emotional distress, as well as hospital and medical expenses. Peter Ou, the owner and operator of the San Francisco franchise in question, responded to TODAY.com's request for comment via email. According to NBC News, in 1992, 79-year-old Stella Liebeck sustained third-degree burns when a hot coffee from a New Mexico-based McDonald's spilled onto her lap. In a statement to local outlet SFGate, her lawyer, Dylan Hackett, said the coffee cup had not been "properly" covered and the coffee itself was "scalding."

SAN FRANCISCO — Standing at the stoop of her childhood home — a slim but stately Victorian shaded by an evergreen pear tree — Lynette Mackey pulled up a photo of a family gathering from nearly 50 years ago. The men were all in suits, the women in skirts. Ms. Mackey, a teenager in red bell bottoms, stretched her arms wide and had a beaming smile. Soon after that time, in the 1960s and 1970s, Ms. Mackey watched the slow erasure of Black culture from the Fillmore District, once celebrated as “the Harlem of the West.” The jazz clubs that drew the likes of Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington disappeared, and so, too, did the soul food restaurants.
